150 winterized transitional shelters and 100 latrines constructed in Skardu, Gilgit Baltistan UN-HABITAT and NDMA has successfully completed 150 winterized transitional shelters and 100 latrines with support of International Organization for Migration (IOM) and Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS). These shelters have been constructed using local materials and incorporated DRM elements using sand bags and plastic sheets. Latrines have been constructed using adobe blocks and CGI sheets for protection. The shelters will provide relief for the people especially in the winter season.
1,118 one-room shelters completed in District Dera Ghazi Khan, Punjab 532 have been completed in Tehsil D.G. Khan and 586 shelters in Tehsil Taunsa. 371 shelters have also been completed in Muzaffargarh, Punjab for the beneficiaries of the super floods of 2010. With the completion of these shelters, the people of Punjab can look forward to building back their lives. More shelters are under construction in other areas of Punjab and rapidly nearing completion in the coming months.
1,706 one room shelters completed in Jacobabad, Sindh UN-HABITAT has successfully completed 1,706 one-room shelters in Jacobabad Sindh, for the flood affected people where through the financial support of UKaid and Youth Action for Pakistan as implementing partners.A one-room shelter is a rectangular shaped 20 square meter structure that can accommodate up to seven people. With its one door and window, it serves as a core room to which beneficiaries can add further rooms, depending on their resources.
Government to redefine urban, rural areas for ongoing population census In order to explore full potential from urban areas, the government has decided to redefine the rural and urban areas for the 6th ongoing Population Census of Pakistan. "Our country is still known as a rural country but the reality is on the other way round. We should change the definition of urban and rural areas", Dr. Nadeem ul Haq, Deputy Chairman Planning Commission said while addressing the National Conference.
Workshop on End Project Evaluation The Ministry of Disaster Management, Government of Pakistan in collaboration with UNICEF, Plan International, UN-HABITAT and Water Aid is hosting a three-day workshop on End-of-Project Evaluation for phase I and Mid-term review and action plan for Phase II of this programme from December 12th – 14th, 2011 in Islamabad.The workshop is being held in purview of the project “Early Recovery on Rural Sanitation in other 19 flood affected districts of Pakistan”
World Toilet Day and Mother Child Week celebrated globally and locally. The UN-HABITAT social team of Union Council Jherruk celebrated World Toilet Day in village Saleh Jamari to emphasize the importance of sanitation and hygiene. 19th November was declared World Toilet Day by the WTO and it is celebrated by water and sanitation advocates all over the world. Through a series of activities such as a walk, games, poems and jokes, related to the importance of toilets and its hygienic use
UN-HABITAT has launched a global campaign to fight against climate change UN-HABITAT has launched a global campaign to fight against climate change which is celebrated every year in October. The theme for this year was “cities and climate change”. This was the first time that the event was held in Pakistan at such a large scale. Cities of Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta were involved in the effort.Government officials, diplomats, academia and communities and United Nations officials were present on the occasion.
World Habitat Day event at Japanese School On Monday 3rd October 2011, World Habitat Day was commemorated all over the world. In Pakistan, it was observed with conferences at the regional offices of Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta and Karachi. Simultaneously, a World Habitat Day event took place at the Islamabad Japanese School. |
