Support to the IDPs living in camps in Peshawar (from August 2008)
UN-HABITAT started responding to the needs of displaced people by providing technical support to UNHCR for establishing camps in Peshawar. Following this UN-HABITAT started direct implementation:
Masonry Trainings to 1300 IDPs, in and outside camps, for skill development and immediate livelihoods.
Devised the model of shelter for IDPs which was adopted by the shelter cluster.
Designed model for summarization of tents to save IDPs from temperature as high as 50 degree Celsius.
In partnership with Mobilink Pakistan, 4 temporary schools and 1 Basic Health Unit (BHU) were constructed at Kund camp.
Construction of a school in Takht Bhai Camp.
Technical support for housing rehabilitation and building improvements.
Support to the IDPs living outside camps (from April 2009)
At the peak of displacement in May 2009, approximately 90% of the total 2.7 million registered IDPs from FATA and NWFP resided outside camps in NWFP, of which a high percentage ware vulnerable living with vulnerable host families. Nearly one million IDPs are estimated to be still residing with host families and communities.
To address this massive humanitarian crisis, UN-HABITAT designed a comprehensive program aimed at improving living conditions of the IDPs and their vulnerable host families in Mardan, Swabi and Charsadda, (NWFP) with interventions in shelter, WASH and community facilities restoration. The following series of interventions are continuing even after 1.6 million IDPs have returned home since July 2009:

Provision of 600 temporary shelters to IDPs in host communities and 2200 house repair kits to host families with IDPs.
WASH Facilities: Provision of water sanitation facilities for host communities with IDPs which included 177 water pumps, 5000 hygiene kits and 665 latrines for vulnerable host families.
Community Facilities Repair: Emergency repair of 300 community facilities in host communities including culverts, street pavement, Hujra repair (community hall), drainage system and mosque latrines installation in 15 Union Councils of Charsadda, Mardan and Swabi.
