IDP Post-Return Response in Sultanwas Village,NWFP Pakistan

After the return started in July 2009, UN-HABITAT conducted a rapid assessment of the totally destroyed village of Sultanwas in Buner district to identify the needs of returned population and started a comprehensive assistance plan that included several activities within the ONE UN initiative with UN-HABITAT as the lead agency.

Creation of local Jirga: Creation and capacity building of the traditional local Jirga to ensure active participation of the community in the rehabilitation work.

Damage and Needs Assessment: A comprehensive assessment of the Sultanwas village to ascertain the level of damage and identify the needs of the community.

Shelter Construction: UN-HABITAT has identified the need of 256 shelters. 225 shelters have been completed and 31 are in progress.

Skill development program: Built a training center for construction skills training. So far 30 people have been trained in brick masonry which will be followed up by carpentry and masonry trainings.

Tents distribution: Provision of 166 to the returnees in Sultanwas

Latrine Construction: Out of identified 100 latrines, 22 have been completed and remaining 78 are in progress.

Unexploded Ordnance Assessment: Coordinated by UN-HABITAT, MSB (Sweden) fielded a specialized team which conducted UXO assessment of the village Sultanwas to find out any possible presence of unexploded materials.

Cash for Work Scheme for rubble removal of damaged houses: UN-HABITAT has launched cash for work scheme to remove the rubble of the houses and recycle salvaged materials. Assessment on houses to be demolished and rubble removal has been done. Out of the total 130 houses identified, 7 have been completed till date.
