WASH Intervention for IDPs in the North West Frontier Province(NWFP) and Federally Administered Tribal Areas(FATA)

Life-saving WASH interventions for the 88,000 IDPs in camps include the provision of safe drinking water, adequate sanitation, bathing and washing facilities and hygiene promotion activities. WASH Non-food items (NFIs) are also being provided, and solid waste management is being supported. WASH interventions have recently been initiated outside the camps, targeting 42,000 of the most vulnerable IDPs. All WASH facilities are designed with due consideration to gender and the needs of children as well as elderly and vulnerable populations.

This project has been designed to sustain already ongoing WASH interventions, including through the maintenance of established facilities and an increase in the level of services provided to address the WASH needs of an influx of an additional 20,000 IDPs in camps. These WASH services include: the provision of safe drinking water, adequate sanitation and bathing and washing facilities and hygiene promotion. The project will also seek to expand interventions to address at a minimum the critical WASH needs of 10,000 of the most vulnerable IDPs outside camps. Funding and security/access constraints have hampered efforts to reach these populations until now.

Within the overall scope of joint WASH intervention by UNICEF, WHO, UN-HABITAT, the following activities are planned to begin to address the life-saving needs of this population by UN-HABITAT:

Installation of 700 latrines for extremely vulnerable IDP families living with Host Families
Installation of 100 Water distribution points/water pumps with water analysis;
Awareness campaign on hygiene promotion for 4,000 families;
Distribution of hygiene kits for 4000 beneficiaries;
Distribution of jerry can and bucket for 4000 beneficiaries;
Distribution of toolkits (pick, shawls, machete) for latrines excavation;
Provision of materials for 700 latrines construction;
Provision of materials for 1000 water distribution points/water pumps;
